Coast Guard Academy senior baseball players Eric Gerken and
Tyler Babkiewich have been named the CGASPORTS.COM Co-Athletes of
Gerken and Babkiewich each hit over .400 in the ECAC New England Division III tournament last week as the Bears advanced to the championship game for the first time in school history.
The duo carried the Coast Guard offense in the tournament as Gerken hit .444 and Babkiewich posted a .417 batting average while the rest of the team hit just .145 (11 for 76). Those two accounted for nine of the team’s 20 hits in the three games. The Bears hit just .206 as a team in the tournament.
Gerken was on base nine times as he had four hits, two walks and
was hit by a pitch twice, leading the team with a .643 on base
percentage during the tournament. He had all four hits in the 3-1
win over Husson in the first round and got on base four times in
the 7-2 win over top-seeded Suffolk on Saturday.
Babkiewich hit safely in all three games as he had two hits in the first round win and had the big hit in the semifinal win, a two-run double to give the Bears the lead for good 3-2. He had just one of the two Coast Guard hits in the 2-0 loss to MIT in the championship game. He leaves as the Bears all-time leader with 139 games played and 116 runs scored while also having a school-record tying 39 doubles.
The Bears won a school-record 24 games and finished 24-17 overall. The senior class finished with 71 wins in their careers tying the mark set from 2000-2003.
