Senior linebacker Jake Behne has been the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Defensive Athlete of the Week and the CGASPORTS.COM Athlete of the Week, presented by First Command, while junior quarterback Ryan Jones has been named NEWMAC Offensive Athlete of the Week.
Behne registered a career-high 18 tackles including 15 solo stops in the Bears 26-12 win at Merchant Marine to capture the Secretaries’ Cup for the first time since 2014 on Saturday.
He also make the key play in the game, an interception that he returned 22 yards to the MMA 30 with 35 seconds left in the first half which led to a touchdown that gave Coast Guard the lead for good.
Jones was 22 of 42 for 269 yards with three touchdowns and an interception in the win. He threw a 15-yard touchdown to freshman Damaso Jaime in the first quarter and a 29 yard strike to sophomore Justin Moffatt with 14 seconds left in the first half as the Bears led 13-10 at the break.
His final touchdown pass was a 30-yarder to Jamie on the opening drive of the third quarter.
Coast Guard shutout the Mariners in the second half and held Merchant Marine to just 58 yards after halftime.
It was Coast Guard's first win at Merchant Marine since 1996 and the Bears finished 7-3 overall and 5-2 in a second place tie the NEWMAC. The seven wins for the Bears are the most since the team finished 8-2 and won the NEFC Bogan Division in 2007.
