Junior Patrick Irwin has named the CGASPORTS.COM Athlete of the Week, presented by First Command as he won the NCAA Division III heavyweight Northeast Region Wrestling Championship, to earn his first berth to the NCAA Championship, leading the Bears to a second place team finish.
Irwin earned the most team points, 22.5 of any Coast Guard wrestler over the weekend as the Bears placed second with 120 points edging out Roger Williams with 117 points.
The Bears will send a record five wrestlers to the NCAA Championship, the second most of any team in the Northeast Region.
Coast Guard had a trio of Northeast Region Champions in AJ Aeberli (174) and Jon Wagner (197) while Nick Remke (165) and Paul Detwiler (184) also earned a berth to the NCAA Division III Championship in Roanoke, Va. on March 8th and 9th.
Irwin, ranked third in New England, pinned Ronnie Caudill from Norwich in three minutes in the opening round before earning an 18-3 tech. fall in 6:05 over Tommy Wresien from Johnson & Wales, who is ranked fourth in New England to secure his spot in the semifinals.
He squeaked out a 1-0 decision over Adam Patson from Roger Williams in the semifinals. Patson pinned top seeded Joe Fusco from Springfield, who is ranked ninth nationally, in the quarterfinals in 3:16.
Irwin won the championship by beating Jesse Webb from Castleton, who is ranked second in New England 2-0. He avenged an earlier season 3-1 sudden victory loss to Webb in the finals of the Ted Reese Invitational.
