Giorgio Named CGASPORTS.COM Athlete of the Week

Coast Guard Academy sophomore All-American Nate Giorgio has been named the CGASPORTS.COM Athlete of the Week as he placed second at the NCAA Division III Northeast Wrestling Regional Championships at WPI to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championships.

Giorgio, the top seed at 125 pounds, cruised to a pair of tech fall wins beating Mike Arangio from Southern Maine 18-0 and Paul Fields of Cortland, the eighth seed, 16-0 during the first day of competition.

On Sunday, he won the semifinal match with a 10-1 major decision over fourth seeded Tom Casper from Springfield, but lost 6-4 in the championship match to second seeded Ricardo Gomez from Ithaca. Giorgio trailed 4-3 and tied the match 4-4 with 16 seconds left before Gomez came back two seconds later to take the 6-4 lead.

Giorgio, who has a record of 23-6 this season, (7-2 at 125 pounds) will now compete in the NCAA Division III Championships on March 15-16 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Giorgio placed fourth at 125 pounds to earn All-America status at the NCAA Championships last season.
