Junior Alexi Howland and sophomore Ricky Rodriguez have been named CGASPORTS.COM Co-Athletes of the Week.
Howland led the women’s basketball team to a perfect 3-0 mark with victories over WPI, Springfield, and Babson, averaging 13.3 points and 2.0 rebounds per game on the week. The Latham, NY native shot a tremendous 57.9 percent from the floor while connecting on 14 of 16 free throw attempts (87.5 percent).
But it wasn’t just that she played terrific as timing had as much to do to complement her performance as anything. After Coast Guard saw a 14-point lead evaporate against Springfield, Howland stepped to the line with the Bears up just 63-61 with 0.5 seconds to play and sank a pair of free throws to seal the victory on Saturday scoring her season-high 21st and 22nd points.
The next day, faced with a similar situation (Babson cut a 26-point deficit to just 2 with 11 seconds to play), Howland (an 81.5 percent free throw shooter on the year) was again fouled and went to the line with a chance to make it a two possession game and netted both free throws to do just that.
On the men’s side, Rodriguez led the Bears to a pair of victories in a 2-1 week. After a hard-fought loss to perennial powerhouse MIT (53-49) on Wednesday, Coast Guard was able to gain their first NEWMAC victory of the season on Saturday over Clark (63-60) before following that up with an encore performance on Sunday against Sarah Lawrence (67-53).
On the week Rodriguez averaged 14.3 points per game connecting on 16-of-35 field goal attempts (45.7 percent), including hitting 35.3 percent of his shots from beyond the arc (6-17). Included is the performance by Rodriguez against Sarah Lawrence when he scored a season-high 16 points, helping the Bears to the first back-to-back wins since November of 2011 when they won four in a row.
Much like Howland, Rodriguez turned to timing to help the Coast Guard cause. After playing Clark tough for much of the first half the Bears were down by four, just before halftime when Rodriguez hit a three while falling down after contact to make it a 30-29 game headed into the break to change the complexion of the game.
The Coast Guard women’s basketball team returns to action tomorrow when they travel to take on Wellesley at 7:00 pm and the men’s basketball team resumes play when they host Springfield tomorrow at 7:00 pm.
