Coast Guard Academy junior Kaitlin Ward has been named the CGASPORTS.COM Athlete of the Week as she played a key role as the women’s basketball team picked up a pair of wins to even its conference record at 4-4 while improving to 6-7 overall.
After a loss to Babson, ranked 22nd nationally on
Tuesday, Ward had nine points, nine rebounds, four assists and two
steals as Coast Guard beat Springfield 53-38 on Thursday. It was
the Bears first win over the Pride since 2008, snapping a nine-game
losing streak to Springfield.
On Saturday, Ward hit a critical 3-pointer with 23 seconds left as Coast Guard went on the road and beat Mount Holyoke 58-52. Ward led the Bears with 12 points to go with five rebounds.
The Bears have won back-to-back NEWMAC games for the first time since 2009. Coast Guard had gone 1-17 in conference play in each of the last two seasons.
