Sutherland Named CGASPORTS.COM Athlete of the Week
Coast Guard Academy freshman Victoria Sutherland has been named
the CGASPORTS.COM Athlete of the Week as she averaged 15.7 points
and 6.7 rebounds, but more importantly she put the team on her back
scoring 24 of her game-high 25 points in the second half of a 64-56
upset win at Wellesley on Wednesday night which clinched a spot in
the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference
(NEWMAC) tournament.
If not for Sutherland’s outstanding second half at
Wellesley, the Bears season would be over. Coast Guard instead is
in the conference tournament for the first time since the 2009-10
season. The team was 2-34 in NEWMAC play over the past two seasons
and just 6-48 in conference play over the past three seasons, but
this year the Bears finished 8-10 in league play and are 10-14
overall.
Sutherland leads the team with 9.8 points per game and is second with 5.4 rebounds per game this season.
Coast Guard is the fifth-seed and will play at fourth-seeded WPI on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the first round of the conference tournament.
