Bears Win Northern Opener

PROVIDENCE, R.I.--(3/14/12)--Senior Eddie Kalankiewicz was 4 for 6 with three doubles, three runs scored, two RBI's and two stolen bases as Coast Guard had a season-high 18 hits in a 10-2 win over Johnson & Wales in the northern opener.

Coast Guard took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first after a two run home run to center field off the bat of junior Nolan Gallagher. Johnson & Wales got an unearned run in the home half of the first to cut the deficit to 2-1.

After battling back and forth for six scoreless innings, Coast Guard then erupted for four runs in the top of the seventh en route to a 6-1 advantage. Kalankiewicz and junior Tyler Babkiewich each had RBI doubles with junior Ed Sella added an RBI single before senior Mike Salerno delivered a sacrifice fly in the inning.

The Bears added three in the eighth as Kalankiewicz had another RBI double and junior Joe Petry ripped a two-run single for a 9-1 lead.

Petry and junior Cameron Carroll each had three hits while Babkiewich and Gallagher, who drove in three runs, each had two hits in the win for Coast Guard.

Freshman Anthony Martin (1-1) picked up his first collegiate win in relief for Coast Guard, pitching two scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts. Junior James Diddell went the first three innings and allowed just one hit and an unearned run. Coast Guard used five pitchers out of the bullpen, who combined for eight innings allowing six hits and one earned run.

The Bears improved to 4-5 on the season and will open conference play on Friday at Clark in the first of a three-game series.
