Bears Drop Season Opener
FORT MYERS, FLA.--(3/3/12)--Wheaton of Illinois hit back-to-back-to-back homers to highlight a six run third inning and beat Coast Guard 15-0 in the opening game of the Gene Cusic Classic, the season opener for both teams.
Freshman Anthony Martin started for the Bears and threw a pair of scoreless innings before running into trouble in the third when the 3-4-5 hitters all homered to left to give Wheaton a 5-0 lead and chase Martin from the game. Martin worked 2 1/3 and allowed six hits and five runs to take the loss.
Senior Nick Peters pitched well in relief allowing three runs on four hits in 2 2/3 innings, but the Bears could not get back in the game.
Junior Trey Martin was 4 for 5 with a triple, a pair of homers and four RBI's to lead the 15 hit attack for Wheaton, which homered five times in the game.
Coast Guard managed just four hits, singles by juniors Mike Massaro, Cameron Carroll and Nolan Gallagher and the Bears only extra base hit of the game, a pinch hit double in the seventh by senior Chris Izurieta.
