Bears Late Rally Falls Short
NEW LONDON, Conn.--Sophomore John Amodeo pitched seven solid innings allowing just two runs on five hits before Coast Guard rallied but fell short losing to Johnson & Wales 10-7 in a non-conference game.
The Wildcats won their sixth straight to improve to 7-2 on the season while Bears dropped their second straight to dip to 6-4 overall.
Coast Guard trailed 10-2 entering the ninth but scored five runs on five hits in the final frame as senior Mike Massaro had an RBI single, sophomore Dan Sabourin added an RBI double and senior Ed Sella ripped an RBI triple. Freshman Kyle Wood added a sacrifice fly in the inning.
Johnson & Wales scored two in the first, one in the second, third and fourth to take a 5-1 lead before erupting for five in the fifth for a commanding 10-2 lead.
Junior Jake Dickerson had an RBI single in the five-run fifth and later with two outs, senior James Reyes added a two-run single and sophomore Kory Ferullo delivered an RBI double.
Dickerson was 3 for 3 with a double, sacrifice fly and two RBI's while Reyes was 3 for 4 with a pair of RBI's. Ferullo had a pair of hits and scored three runs while junior Tyler Pacheco added two hits and two runs scored in the win.
Amodeo (1-0) allowed just five hits and a pair of earned runs while not walking a batter and striking out six to pickup the win.
Senior James Diddell (0-1) was the starter and loser for Coast Guard. He worked four innings and allowed seven hits and five earned runs while walking five and fanning two.
Sophomore Andrew Lucak (2 1/3 innings), freshman Sean Barry (2/3 of an inning) and freshman Kyle Wood (1 inning) combined to pitch the final four innings and allowed just one hit keeping the Bears in the game.
Sella led the Bears with three hits while seniors Cameron Carroll and Mike Massaro each had two hits for Coast Guard.
Coast Guard is back in action on Friday when the Bears host WPI in the first game of a three-game weekend series at 3:30 p.m. The doubleheader scheduled for Saturday at WPI has been moved to New London, due to poor field conditions in Worcester, the doubleheader will begin at noon.
