Bears Fall to #23 Wheaton 25-5

NEW LONDON, Conn.—Sophomore Justin Silvestro had three hits including a pair of home runs and drove in six runs while classmate Matt Lavanchy had three hits, homered and also drove in six leading Wheaton to a 25-5 win over Coast Guard in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

Wheaton, ranked 23rd nationally, won its 11th straight to improve to 19-6-1 overall and 8-2 in the NEWMAC while the Bears drop to 9-15 overall and 4-6 in conference play.

The 25 runs score by Wheaton is the most the Lyons have scored against the Bears in the 44 meetings between the two teams.

Wheaton finished with 24 hits and four homers in the win.

Silvestro hit a two-run homer in the second and a two-run homer in the third while Lavanchy added a two-run home run in the third as the Lyons built a 6-1 lead after three innings.

The Lyons scored in every inning expect for the first and ninth.

Silvestro finished 3 for 4 as he also had an RBI single and was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded while Lavanchy was 3 for 6 with a two-run double, RBI single and RBI ground out to account for his six RBI's.

Freshman Zachary Goodwin-Boyd hit a pinch-hit three-run homer in the 8th, his first collegiate hit for the Lyons.

Sophomore Jimmy Smith, junior Zach Bombard and junior Justin Peluso each added three hits for Wheaton.

Freshman Michael Bruemmel went 5 2/3 innings scattering nine hits and allowing five earned runs while striking out one to pickup his team leading fourth win of the season to improve to 4-2 on the year.

Freshman Eric Vrissis (1-2) was the starter and loser for the Bears.

Senior Lukas Laplante was 3 for 3 with two doubles and three runs scored while sophomore Cory Sonnega added two doubles and three RBI's. Sophomore Kyle Wood also had two hits for the Bears.

The Bears are back in action on Friday when they play WPI at Worcester State at 3:30 p.m. the first a of a three-game weekend series.
