BOSTON, Mass. – Coast Guard Academy freshman catcher Alex Murdoch, who made quite a splash during his first weekend of collegiate baseball, has been named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Baseball Co-Player of the Week.
In his collegiate debut, Murdoch was 3 for 5 with four RBI's, had a two-run triple which gave Coast Guard the lead in the seventh and tagged out the tying run in the bottom of the ninth in a 7-6 season opening win over North Park on Saturday and followed that up with an RBI single on Sunday vs. Merchant Marine which tied the game 8-8 and he would come around and score the eventual game winning run in the 9-8 win.
Murdoch was 4 for 8 with a double and five RBI's in his first two collegiate games over the weekend to earn the NEWMAC honor.
He shares the weekly honor with Kyle Bonicki from Clark.
Coast Guard is 4-0 on the season, its best start since the Bears began the 2005 season with five straight wins.
The Bears are back in action on Wednesday at 9 a.m. vs. Minnesota Morris at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla.
