FORT MYERS, Fla. – Freshman Alex Murdoch's two out RBI single in the seventh broke a 7-7 tie and the Bears held on for a 9-7 win over Wisconsin-Platteville to close out the southern swing at the Gene Cusic Classic.
The Bears trailed 7-5 entering the seventh. Junior Kyle Wood tripled home sophomore Tim Duncan, who led off with a walk. Wood scored on an RBI single by junior Cory Sonnega to tie game 7-7.
Sonnega stole second and scored on Murdoch's line drive RBI single to center for the 8-7 lead.
The Bears added an insurance run in the eighth as Sonnega delivered another RBI single scoring senior Matt Hanks, who was hit by a pitch.
Freshman Cody Bain (1-0) three scoreless innings to close out the game and pick up his first collegiate win. Bain got himself in a bases loaded jam in the ninth as he allowed a pair of singles and walked a batter, but got a pair of ground ball outs to end the game.
Bain allowed three hits walked two and struck out three in getting the win.
The Bears scored four runs in the second to take a 4-0 lead. Junior Ed Lazowski had an RBI single before senior Blake Thompson drilled a two-run double to left and scored on an RBI single by Hanks.
Wisconsin-Platteville (0-1) got two in the fourth and scored three in the fifth for a 5-4 lead.
Coast Guard tied the game 5-5 in the fifth when Duncan was hit by a pitch to lead off, stole second and scored on a wild pitch.
Murdoch was 3 for 4 while Sonnega, Hanks and Wood each added two hits in the win as the Bears return home with a record of 6-2.
Coast Guard hopes to be back in action on Saturday when they host MIT in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader at noon if the field is playable.
