Springfield Beats Bears in Series Opener

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Sophomore Ken Manero threw 3 2/3 innings of hitless relief while freshmen Evan Moore and Brandon Drabinski each drove in two runs leading Springfield to a 7-2 win over Coast Guard in the first game of a three-game weekend New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) series.

Springfield improves to 8-10-1 overall and 2-4 in the conference while Coast Guard drops to 8-13 overall 1-3 in the NEWMAC.

The Pride got on the board in the first as senior Billy Peterson led off with a single and came around on a throwing error before Drabinski delivered a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.

Coast Guard pulled even in the third on an RBI triple by senior Mark Behne and an RBI single by senior Cory Sonnega.

Springfield took the lead for good in the fourth when freshman Matt Fraioli led off with a double and scored an error for a 3-2 lead.

The Pride added insurance runs in the seventh as junior JP Peters singled and scored on a passed ball and another run in the eighth when Drabinski drew a bases loaded walk for a 5-2 lead.

Springfield closed the scoring with two in the ninth on a two-run single by freshman Evan Moore.

Freshman Brian Johnson started for Springfield and went 4 1/3 innings allowing six hits and two runs, both earned, with two walks and six strikeouts. Manero came on with runners on first and second in the fifth and the Pride leading 3-2 and got a double play on a strike out and caught stealing to escape the jam.

Manero walked two and fanned three to pick up the win and improve to 2-0 on the season.

Junior Eric Vrissis (0-3) went 6 1/3 allowing six hits and four runs, two earned while walking four and striking out three in taking the loss.

Senior Corey Wilcox and Fraioli each had two hits in the win for the Pride.

Behne was 3 for 4 with a triple and an RBI to lead Coast Guard while freshman Will Stephens had a pair of hits for the Bears.

The Bears and Pride conclude the three-game series with a doubleheader at Springfield on Saturday beginning at noon.
