Babson Quiets Bears Bats

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Junior Jack Halpin's three-run double highlighted a four-run ninth inning leading Babson to a 6-1 win over Coast Guard in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

Sophomore Teddy Carey (2-2) allowed just four hits and one run over seven innings to pick up the win. He walked two and struck out six before giving way to junior Graham Stack, who allowed a single in the eighth and sophomore Matt Cuneo, who struck out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth to close it out.

The Beavers improve to 17-12-1 overall and 7-7 in the NEWMAC while Coast Guard drops to 14-18 overall and 6-8 in the conference.

Babson struck first in the fourth on an RBI single by junior Owen Shea before the Bears finally evened things in the sixth on an RBI triple by junior Kyle Jackson.

Freshman Eric Jaun threw out Jackson at home trying to tag on a shallow fly ball to end the inning and keep the game tied 1-1.

The Beavers took the lead in the seventh as freshman Edward Lehr led off with an infield single was bunted to second and later scored on an RBI single by freshman Connor Gill for a 2-1 lead.

Babson put the game away in the ninth loading the bases on a walk, hit batter and then a two-out infield single by sophomore Adam Ayala before Halpin's fly ball beat the right fielder clearing the bases. Sophomore Mark Webber added an RBI single to score Halpin.

Coast Guard used five pitchers. Junior Colton Cannon pitched two scoreless innings to start things off before sophomore Joe Siciliano went three innings allowing two hits and the unearned run before freshman Jack Brandt (0-1) worked two innings allowed three hits and a run and took the loss. 

Halpin was 3 for 5 with a pair of doubles while Ayala added two hits in the win for Babson.

Sophomore Zach Serna and freshman Will Stephens each had two hits for the Bears.

The Bears are back in action on Friday when they open a key three-game series with Clark. The first game will be play at Clark on Friday at 3:30 before the teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday at Coast Guard beginning at noon. The winner of the three-game series earns a spot in the conference tournament on Thursday.
