FORT MYERS, Fla. – Senior Timbo Duncan homered in each game and junior Zach Serna had a single, two doubles and two triples as both drove in four runs as Coast Guard swept archrival Merchant Marine at the Gene Cusic Classic to secure the Superintendent's Trophy for the 2016-17 season.
The Bears won the opener 7-5 before a 9-0 shutout win in the nightcap. Coast Guard now has a 10.5-3.5 lead with just six sports left to compete in the year long competition as the Bears win the Superintendent's Trophy for the third straight season.
Coast Guard, which had dropped four straight to open the season, improves to 2-4 overall while the Mariners drop to 0-2 on the season .
The teams meet again on Monday morning at 9:00 in the final game of the three-game series.
GAME ONE – Coast Guard 7, Merchant Marine 5
Senior Colton Cannon went 5 1/3 innings and allowed three hits and a pair of earned runs while walking five and striking out seven, senior Zach Serna added two RBI triples while senior Timbo Duncan hit a two-run homer leading the Bears to their first win of the season.
Merchant Marine loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter in the top of the first, Cannon got a pair of strikeouts and a pop up to get out of the jam.
The Bears erupted for four runs in the third on an RBI triple by Serna, but came around and scored on an error for a 2-0 lead before junior Christian Toscano capped the inning with a two-run single giving Coast Guard a 4-0 lead.
Merchant Marine scored three times in the fourth cutting the deficit to 4-3.
Duncan hit a towering two-run homer to right in the fifth, his first hit of the season, to give the Bears a 6-3 lead.
The Mariners got one back in the sixth as three hit batters loaded the bases and a wild pitch made the score 6-4 as junior Joe Siciliano came on and got the final two outs to end the threat.
Serna's RBI triple in the home half of the sixth scored freshman Jon Pressley for a 7-4 lead.
Merchant Marine got one in the seventh off freshman closer Brett Sullivan in the seventh before he got a ground ball double play to earn his first career save.
Toscano also had two hits in the win for the Bears.
GAME TWO – Coast Guard 9, Merchant Marine 0
Senior Eric Vrissis threw a six-hit shutout did not walk a batter and struck out three to improve to 1-1 on the season.
Coast Guard got all they would need in the second as the Bears scored four runs. Freshman Jon Pressley singled and scored on an error. Sophomore Jake Behne had a sacrifice fly. Sophomore Luke Thompson followed with an RBI single and Serna pushed the lead to 4-0 with an RBI single.
Duncan hit solo homer in the fifth and added and RBI single in the sixth when sophomore Will Stephens also scored on a wild pitch as the Bears pushed the lead to 7-0.
Stephens had an RBI single in the seventh before Serna added an RBI double to close the scoring.
Duncan was 3 for 5 with a homer and two RBI's and two stolen bases, Serna was also 3 for 5 with two doubles and a pair of RBI's as the Bears had 12 hits in the game two win.
Senior Kyle Jackson also added two hits for the Bears.
