NEW LONDON, Conn. – Sophomore Shawn Babineau threw seven scoreless innings allowing just three hits and sophomore Chris Shade was 4 for 5 leading Springfield to an 11-0 win over Coast Guard to complete a three-game sweep of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) weekend series.
Springfield improves to 17-5-2 overall and 6-2 in the NEWMAC while the Bears drop to 6-11 overall and 0-8 in conference play.
Babineau (3-2) walked two and struck out four to pick up the win while sophomore Cole Donovan threw two hitless innings and struck out two to close out the game for Springfield.
Brett Sullivan (2-3) went the first six innings for the Bears and allowed six hits and three earned runs in taking the loss.
Springfield got all it would need in the top of the first on an RBI single by freshman Jack Cooney scoring Shade, who led off the game with a double.
Shade's RBI single in the fifth pushed the lead to 2-0 before a sacrifice fly by freshman Noah Bleakley in the sixth gave Springfield a 3-0 lead.
The Pride would score eight runs off the Bears bullpen in the final three innings.
Springfield would get three in the seventh with the big hit being a two-run single by senior Mark Joao and one more in the eighth for a 7-0 lead.
Senior Logan Barrett's pinch hit two-run double highlighted a four run ninth. Junior Cam Rivet had an RBI double in the inning while senior Peter Marsicano closed the scoring with an RBI single.
Joao had two hits and two RBI's as Springfield finished with 13 hits in the win.
The Bears are back in action on Monday when they play at Westfield State at 3:30 in a non-conference game.
