NEW LONDON, Conn . – Will Stephens hit his first career home run, a three-run shot in the fifth and Walter Harris picked up the win as Coast Guard beat Albertus Magnus 8-2 in a non-conference game.
Harris (1-0) went 5 2/3 innings and allowed just two hits and an earned run while walking four and fanning a career eight to pick up his first win of the season.
Nate Ralph allowed just one run and one hit while striking out two over the next 2 1/3 innings before Cody Fidler pitched a perfect ninth and struck out a batter to close out the game for Coast Guard, which improves to 7-6 overall.
Fidler got the Bears on the board in the second with a sacrifice fly before Matt Warren's RBI double in the third the game 1-1.
The Bears took the lead on an RBI ground out by Luke Thompson in the third and broke the game open with four in the fifth on Stephens' three-run shot to left and an RBI double by Jon Pressley for a 6-1 lead.
Jeremy Lhotka had an RBI single in the seventh to give Coast Guard a 7-1 lead.
Elijah Spataj delivered and RBI double in the 8th for Albertus before Lhotka walked with the bases loaded in the ninth to close the scoring.
Shawn McFeggan (0-1) worked the first five innings and allowed five hits and five earned runs to take the loss.
Lhotka was the only player with more than one hit for both teams as he finished with two hits and two RBI's.
Coast Guard is back in action tomorrow afternoon as they open NEWMAC play at Emerson at 2:30.
