NEW LONDON, Conn . – Will Stephens' RBI single in the bottom of the 11th completed a sweep for Coast Guard as the Bears swept a non-conference doubleheader from Castleton State 5-3 in the opener and 4-3 in 11 innings in game two.
Luke Thompson, who scored the game winning run in the 11th, recorded his 100th career hit in game two and finished the day with 101 hits. He was 3 for 3 reaching base all six times up in the second game.
Coast Guard matches its win total from last year improving to 11-8 on the season while Castleton drops to 7-9 on the season.
The Bears are back in action on Tuesday when they host Emerson at 3:30 in a NEWMAC game.
GAME ONE – COAST GUARD 5, CASTLETON 3
Dustin Reeder pitched five sold innings and Stephens was 2 for 2 with a double and two RBI's leading the Bears to the 5-3 win in the opener.
Reeder (3-1) allowed a lead off single and then a two-run homer before settling down and allowing just one more hit over the first five innings. He allowed two earned runs, walked five and struck out a season-high nine to get the win.
Owen Hurley threw a perfect sixth and Dan Finn pitched a hitless seventh to register his second save of the season.
Cameron Goulet (0-2) took the loss in relief as he worked the final two innings and allowed four this and a pair of earned runs.
David Mikell had two of the Spartans three hits in the game.
Mikell gave Castleton a 2-0 lead with a two-run homer to left in the first inning, his fourth of the season.
Jeremy Lhotka's RBI single in the home half of the first cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Spartans stole a run in the top of the second with the run scoring on a double steal attempt to make the score 3-1.
Coast Guard pulled even in the bottom of the second as Stephens delivered and RBI singled and later in the inning Tom Ankers scored on a wild pitch to tie the game 3-3.
Alex Cordes RBI single in the fifth gave the Bears a 4-3 lead before Coast Guard added an insurance run on an RBI double by Stephens in the sixth to close the scoring.
GAME TWO – COAST GUARD 4, CASTLETON 4 (11 INNINGS)
Stephens' RBI single in the bottom of the 11th gave Coast Guard the 4-3 win and the sweep of Castleton.
Stephens (1-0) was also sensational on the mound as he worked the final 3 2/3 innings and did not allow a hit, walked four and fanned five to get his first win of the season. Dan Wolf had 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief before giving way to Stephens in the 8th.
Thompson had three singles, including an infield single in the fifth for his 100th hit, while he also walked three times, stole two bases and scored two runs in the win.
Lhotka added three hits and a pair of RBI's while Stephens added two hits for the Bears.
Coast Guard took a 2-0 lead in the first on an RBI groundout by Lhotka before Jake Behne's RBI single.
Castleton got one back in the third when Dillon Benham was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make the score 2-1.
The Spartans took the lead in the fifth as Benham tied the game with an RBI double and Dylan Bailey added an RBI single for the 3-2 lead.
Lhotka tied the game in the fith with a two-out RBI single before both bullpens put up zeros until the 11th.
Mikell (0-1) took the loss going three innings and allowing three hits and the one run while walking two and fanning five.
Deagan Poland and Matt Jackson each had two hits for the Spartans while Mikell had a double and drew five walks, two of them intentional.
