Five Bears Named All-Division
NEW LONDON, Conn.--(11/11/11)--The Coast Guard Academy placed five players on the New England Football Conference (NEFC) All-Bogan Division team voted on by the eight head coaches in the division.
Junior Eric Gerken, who set a single-season school-record and led the conference with 70 receptions, was named to the first team as both a wide receiver and a return specialist while junior defensive lineman John Manganiello joined him on the first team.
Senior quarterback Jarrod Owens, senior linebacker Nick Peters and junior defensive back Drew Russo were all named to the second team.
Gerken earns first team wide receiver honors for the second straight season after registering 70 receptions for 781 yards and seven touchdowns while also rushing for a touchdown. He was a major threat on special teams often kicked away from. Gerken led the Bears with nine punt returns for 83 yards while adding three kick returns for 50 yards on the season.
Manganiello earned All-division honors for the first time as he recorded 47 tackles, 25 solo, 5.5 for loss with one sack and a safety to his credit.
All three members on the second team all earned All-division Owens, the NEFC Offensive Player of the Week this past week, was second in the Bogan Division with 1,541 yards and 12 touchdowns. He completed 146 of 254 passes and also rushed for 272 yards and seven touchdowns.
Peters, a first year starter, had 47 tackles, 28 solo, three for loss one sack and a pair of interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown.
Russo, a cornerback, recorded 39 tackles, 31 solo, four for loss with two interceptions and five pass breakups.
Coast Guard was 2-7 overall and 2-5 finishing sixth in the Bogan Division. The Bears lost five games by seven points or less, four of those in the final minute.
