NEW LONDON, Conn.-As the fall semester winds down and our Cadet-Athletes are wrapped up in exams the Athletic Department will take a look at the Top Moments from the Coast Guard fall sports season. The Department has compiled a top-ten list and will unveil one a day for ten business days starting with number ten and culminating with today's announcement of the top moment.
Today we look at our #1 moment from our Top Moments series for the fall season. After seeing numerous great moments throughout the fall, one runs away with the top spot and that was Joe Rizzardi winning the prestigious Gold Helmet Award presented by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston.
Rizzardi was recognized for his performance in Coast Guard's 37-20 victory over Nichols in the New England Football Conference (NEFC) opener for both schools. The Ashburn, Va. native played an integral part in the victory, returning two interceptions for touchdowns (equaling a Coast Guard season record) and recording six solo tackles on the afternoon.
During the first quarter of the contest he returned an interception 28 yards for a touchdown to give the Bears a 10-6 lead. With time winding down in the second quarter and the score tied 13-13, Rizzardi returned his second pick, this time 30 yards, for a touchdown to break the tie and give Coast Guard a 20-13 lead and all the momentum heading into the halftime break.
We thank you for following our Top Moments series and look forward to your continued support of Coast Guard Athletics.
