Coast Guard junior center J.D. Dunaway was honored as the Coast Guard Academy Scholar Athlete at the Southeastern Connecticut Chapter of the National Football Foundation Banquet at Mohegan Sun.
Scholar-athletes from 15 local high schools as well as the United States Coast Guard Academy were recognized with eight adult award winners who have made outstanding contributions to high school football in southeastern Connecticut.
Dunaway is a three-year starter on the Bears offensive line having started all 30 games since arriving on campus. He started at right guard for two seasons before moving to center last year.
He has a 3.6 GPA as a Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering major and he is a two-time member of the New England Football Conference (NEFC) All-Academic team.
Coast Guard was 5-5 last season, 4-3 in the NEFC. The Bears open the 2016 season at Anna Maria on Thursday, September 1st at 7:00.
