NEW LONDON, Conn. – Freshman Andre Ross Jr. had 16 receptions for 215 yards and three touchdowns leading Union to a 28-10 win over host Coast Guard in a non-conference game.
Sophomore Will Bellamy was 39 of 52 for 365 yards and three touchdowns as Union, which improved to 2-0, did not turn over the ball and finished with 434 yards of total offense while holding Coast Guard to 280 total yards (215 passing and 65 rushing).
Coast Guard junior quarterback Ryan Jones was 19 of 33 for 215 yards and was intercepted three times. Sophomore Justin Moffatt had a career-high 11 receptions and led the way with 106 receiving yards for the Bears who are now 1-1 on the season.
Union scored on its first possession as the Dutchmen had a long 16 play, 81 yard drive capped on a 5-yard run by freshman Ike Irabor for a 7-0 lead with 7:17 left in the first quarter. Irabor led Union with 12 carries for 52 yards in the game.
The Bears would go three-and-out for the second straight time when this time Union struck quick. Bellamy threw a 70-yard touchdown pass to Ross Jr. three plays later pushing the lead to 14-0 with 4:05 left in the opening quarter.
Union had 173 yards in the first quarter while Coast Guard had 35.
The Bears would get on the board when senior Cole Austin kicked a 27-yard field goal with eight minutes left in the first half.
The Dutchmen broke the Bears back in the final seconds of the first half as they took over with 25 seconds left on their own 41-yard line and on third down, Bellamy fired a 53-yard touchdown strike to Ross Jr. with five seconds left giving Union a 21-3 lead at halftime.
Bellamy was 21 of 28 for 228 yards in the first half while Ross Jr. had 10 receptions for 171 yards in the half as Union totaled 261 first half yards to Coast Guard's 154.
After a scoreless third quarter, Coast Guard scored its only touchdown of the game as the Bears marched 91 yards in 12 plays and the drive was finished on 1-yard run by sophomore Jon Wagner, the first touchdown of his career, with 7:19 left in the game to cut the deficit to 21-10. Wagner led the Bears with 10 carries for 41 yards.
Following an unsuccessful onsides kick, Union would put the game away when Bellamy threw a 6-yard touchdown to Ross Jr. on 4th-and-goal with 2:39 left to close the scoring.
Senior linebacker Jack Reilly led Union with seven tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack while junior Michael Goldsworthy led the Bears with 10 tackles and four pass breakups.
Coast Guard is back in action on Friday night at 7:00 in the final non-conference game of the season at Nichols.
