Bears Close out 2011 With Win
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(12/31/11)--Junior Greg Marshall had 16 of his team-high 22 points in the second half as Coast Guard erased a nine-point second half deficit to beat Salve Regina 85-82 in a non-conference game to close out 2011.
Coast Guard improves to 6-3 overall while Salve Regina drops to 4-5 on the season.
Salve Regina led 62-53 with 13:53 left before Coast Guard used a 10-2 run cutting the deficit to 64-63 with 12 minutes left.
The Bears took their first lead of the half 71-69 on a bucket by Marshall with 4:39 left in the game.
Coast Guard led 77-76 with 2:18 left before the Bears scored seven straight, making seven of ten from the foul line, to put the game away.
The Seahawks, who led by as many as seven in the first half led 41-40 at halftime as Coast Guard used an 7-2 run to end the half.
Sophomore Kevin Sowers had 15 points and six rebounds off the bench for Coast Guard while classmate Devonte Weems finished with a season-high 14 points and a team-high four steals.
Freshman David Anderson and junior Jimmy Knudsen each had double-doubles for the Bears as Anderson finished with 12 points and ten rebounds for his third double-double of the season while Knudsen had ten points and a season-high 11 rebounds to register his first double-double of the season.
Sophomore Isiah Pringle led Salve Regina with 22 points while graduate student Ryan Birrell added 21 points to go with seven assists and eight rebounds, both team highs.
Sophomore Scott St. Lawrence finished with 12 points while classmate Joshua Hohlfelder had 11 for the Seahawks.
Coast Guard shot 48.4 percent from the field (31-64) while hitting three of 11 from 3-point range while Salve Regina shot 41.9 percent from the floor (31-74) while connecting on nine of 19 from behind the arc.
The Bears outrebounded Salve Regina 47-40 in the win.
