Marshall, Anderson Lead Bears to OT Win
SWARTHMORE, PA.--(11/18/11)--Junior Greg Marshall and freshman David Anderson combined for 50 points as Marshall had a career-high 28 and Anderson finished with a career-high 22 points and ten rebounds leading Coast Guard to a 73-71 overtime win over Haverford on the opening night of the 20th Annual Equinox Classic at Swarthmore College.
Coast Guard scored the first eight points of the overtime period for a 71-63 lead following a layup by Marshall with 1:28 left, but the Fords did not go quietly.
Haverford cut the lead to 71-68 on a hoop by Cam Baker with 42 seconds left in overtime. Marshall made a pair of free throws before a 3-pointer by Ian Goldberg made it 73-71 with 31 seconds left.
Marshall then missed a pair of free throws with 15 seconds left giving the Fords a chance but Baker's 3-pointer, for the win, at the buzzer was no good and the Bears held on to even their record at 1-1 on the season.
Marshall was 10 of 17 from the floor and 4 of 8 from behind the arc while Anderson was nine of 12 from the floor. Marshall had 19 points in the first half on 7 of 10 shooting while Anderson was a perfect 5 for 5 from the floor in the first half with 12 points as the Bears shot 51.9 percent in the first half (14-27) while making three of five from 3-point range. Marshall and Anderson were 12 of 15 from the floor in the opening half while the rest of the team was just two of 12 in the first 20 minutes.
The Bears shot 48.1 percent in the game (26-54) while making four of 14 from 3-point range while Haverford was 25 of 66 (37.1 percent) while making seven of 28 from behind the arc.
Coast Guard led 39-35 at halftime. The score was tied 33-33 before Marshall hit a pair of 3-pointers giving the Bears their largest lead of the half 39-33 with 2:30 left in the opening stanza.
The Bears scored the first five points of the second half on a bucket by Anderson and a 3-pointer by Marshall to take its largest lead of the game 44-35. Coast Guard led 46-38 before the Fords ran off eight straight to tie the game 46-46 with 15:04 left.
The largest lead the rest of the way was just three points as the teams traded blows. Sowers steal and bucket gave the Bears a 62-60 lead with 3:19 left.
Baker hit a pair of free throws with 33 seconds left to tie the game 63-63. Marshall had a chance to win the game in regulation, but missed and Haverford got the rebound with 1.5 seconds left before the game headed to overtime.
Sophomore Kevin Sowers finished with eight points and a career-high eight assists for the Bears.
Baker led Haverford (0-2) with 24 points while Goldberg finished with 19 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Coast Guard will take on co-host Swarthmore in its second and final game of the Equinox Classic on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Haverford College.
