Bears, Anderson Come Back to Beat Southern Vermont
WILLIAMSTOWN, MASS.—Sophomore David Anderson recorded his second straight double-double and had 17 of his career-high 24 points in the second half as Coast Guard scored the final 13 points of the game for a 68-57 win over Southern Vermont in the consolation game of the Williams Tip-Off Tournament at Williams College.
Coast Guard trailed 57-55 with 5:55 left but the Bears scored the final 13 points, seven from the foul line to pickup its first win of the season.
Anderson, who finished with a career-high tying 13 rebounds, scored the Bears first five points of the second half, but the Mountaineers scored seven straight to open up their largest lead of the game to that point 44-38 with 13:40 left.
Southern Vermont took its largest lead of the game 50-43 with 10:50 left before the Bears used a 12-4 spurt capped on a layup by senior Jimmy Knudsen to regain the lead 55-54 with 6:34 left. Knudsen's bucket with 5:16 left gave the Bears the lead for good a 59-57.
Coast Guard (1-1) scored the first six points of the game, but the Mountaineers tied it 11-11 with 15:15 left in the opening half.
The back-and-forth first half saw neither take a lead of more than four points the rest of the half with seven lead changes and five ties and Southern Vermont led 35-33 at halftime.
Senior Greg Marshall led the Bears with 11 points in the first half, while freshman Joe Whitman had nine first half points. Coast Guard was 13 for 26 from the floor in the opening half while making 2 of 5 from 3-point range while Southern Vermont shot 40 percent (14 of 35) while hitting 5 of 7 from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes.
Marshall finished with 20 points to go with seven rebounds and a team-high three assists while Knudsen had eight points and eight rebounds in the win.
Coast Guard shot 46 percent from the field (23-50) and made 2 of 9 from 3-point range. Southern Vermont shot just 16.7 percent in the second half (6-36) and finished the game 20-71 (28.2 percent) from the floor while making 8 of 21 from behind the arc.
The Bears are back in action on Tuesday night across town at Mitchell with tip set for 5:30 p.m.
