Bears Fall at Home to Springfield

NEW LONDON, Conn.--Senior Alex Berthiaume led all scorers with 18 points while junior Robbie Burke added 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds leading Springfield to a 58-45 win over Coast Guard in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

Springfield jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first three minutes and never trailed improving to 15-6 overall and 6-2 in conference play while Coast Guard dropped to 1-17 overall and 0-8 in the NEWMAC.

The Pride led 17-4 following a 3-pointer by Berthiaume with 8:02 left in the first half before Coast Guard used a 9-2 spurt to cut the deficit to 19-13 with 4:40 left in the opening half.

Springfield would answer with an 8-0 run to take a 27-13 lead with 1:20 left and the Pride led 27-15 at halftime.

The Bears used a 10-2 run in the second half to cut the Pride lead to 35-30 with 13:30 left, but once again Springfield responded, this time with a 9-2 spurt opening a 44-32 lead with 11:27 remaining in the game.

The Pride would lead by as many as 16 at 52-36 with 3:22 left.

Senior Greg Marshall led Coast Guard with 15 points and is now 15 points shy of becoming the 19th member of the men's basketball 1,000 point club.

Senior Jimmy Knudsen added nine points while Knudsen and sophomore David Anderson each finished with a team-high six rebounds.

Springfield shot 37.5 percent from the field (21-56) while making 4 of 19 from behind the arc while Coast Guard shot 32.8 percent from the floor (19-58) and made 4 of 17 from 3-point range.

The Pride outrebounded the Bears 44-37 including 16 offensive rebounds.
