NEW LONDON, Conn. – Sophomore Ricky Rodriguez had a game-high 16 points leading Coast Guard to a 67-53 win over Sarah Lawrence in the first meeting between the two schools.
The Bears win back-to-back games for the first time since November of 2011 and improve to 4-11 on the season while Sarah Lawrence drops to 5-10 on the year.
Coast Guard used a 12-2 run to end the first half taking a 32-20 lead into the break.
The Gryphons had cut the lead to 33-25 with 16:30 left before the Bears ran off eight straight, the final four coming on four free throws from sophomore Avierre Conner giving Coast Guard a 41-25 lead with 15:04 left.
Sarah Lawrence would get as close 61-53 with 1:10 left, but the Bears went 6 for 6 from the line in the final minute to put the game away.
Freshman Adrian Chuquillangui added nine points and three assists off the bench for the Bears while senior John Benedict had a team-high six rebounds in the win.
Freshman Graham Gilleran led the Gryphons with 14 points while freshman Stevan Radosavljevic had a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 16 rebounds.
Coast Guard shot 41.1 percent from the field (23-56) and made just 3 of 20 from 3-point range in the win while Sarah Lawrence shot 41.7 percent from the floor (20-48) while making 5 of 14 from 3-point range.
The Bears are back in action on Wednesday night when host Springfield at 7 p.m.
