BRONX, N.Y. - Senior Kevin Alvarez had a season high twenty points, but Coast Guard fell to Lehman 86-76 in nonconference play.
The loss is the first for the Bears this season as they fall too 2-1. The Lightning improve to 2-2 on the year.
Alvarez scored his 20 points shooting 50%(6-12) from the field. Freshman Bryce Schroeder had a career high 15 points with two three pointers. Sophomore Micah Baldez added 14 points of his own while freshman Luke Daniels had 10. Senior Mark Krebs had a team high 11 rebounds.
Senior Chaun Miller had a game high 30 points shooting 11-16 (68.8%). Freshman Niv Solomon had his first career double double scoring 12 points while grabbing a game high 16 rebounds. Sophomore Andrew Utate was second on the team with 21 points for Lehman.
Coast Guard ran out to an early nine point lead with 12:56 left in the first half as Schroeder took a pass from Baldez and drilled a three pointer to make the score 21-12.
The Lightning crept back into the game closing within four points at 34-30 on two free throws from junior Edwin Pascual.
The Bears answered quickly however, as Daniels sunk a three to push the lead back to seven. Coast Guard would hold a seven point lead going into the second half, 41-34.
Lehman came out firing in the second, starting the half on a 19-5 run taking a 53-46 lead with 14 minutes left in the game.
Coast Guard climbed back within two at 57-55 when Alvarez made one from the stripe with just under ten minutes on the clock.
The Lighting would take control of the game from this point on pushing their lead to as much as 14 on their way to their second win of the season, 86-76.
The Bears made 28-70 (40%) from the floor and shot 42.1% (8-19) from beyond the arc. The Coast Guard bench was able to make an impact outscoring the Lehman bench 35-28.
The Lighting shot 48.4% (30-62) from the field while going 8-17 (47.1%) from three. Lehman out rebounded the Bears 43-37 and also held an advantage in blocks 7-2.
Coast Guard returns to action on Wednesday, December 2nd, when they host cross-town rival Mitchell in nonconference action. Tip off is 7:00 pm.
