TAMPA, Fla. – Junior Luke Lattner had 18 of his game-high 25 points in the second half and scored eight straight to cap a 12-2 second half run as tournament host DePauw snapped Coast Guard's four-game winning streak with a 82-71 win over the Bears in the opening round of the Tampa Bay Shootout at Tampa Prep.
Coast Guard, which was held to a season-low 71 points, drops to 6-2 on the season while DePauw improves to 4-5 on the year. The Bears will play in the consolation game on Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m.
Senior Kevin Alvarez had a team-high 18 points to lead Coast Guard while sophomore Micah Baldez finished with 16 points, 15 of those in the second half. Sophomore Ethan Boose was also in double figures for the Bears as he finished with 16 points and a team-high five rebounds.
"I was really pleased with our competitive spirit tonight, I thought we fought real hard,"said Coast Guard head coach Kevin Jaskiewicz. "DePauw is really good team, they are well coached and this is a great test for us leading into conference play."
"It is a great opportunity for us to come down here and play in a great tournament with teams from all over the country," added Jaskiewicz. "We were well represented in the stands tonight, it was great that Admiral Rendon got to see us compete. It is a great bonding experience for our team and I'm glad that we had the opportunity to play here in the Tampa Bay Shootout."
The Bears trailed 9-5 in the first four minutes before using a 9-3 spurt to take their first lead of the game 14-12 following a basket by Boose with 12:01 left in the half.
Senior Ricky Rodriguez's 3-pointer gave Coast Guard a 26-24 lead with 3:33 left in the first half before the Tigers used a 12-2 run to end the half taking a 36-28 lead at the break.
Alvarez led the Bears with 11 points in the first half. Coast Guard shot 33.3 percent in the first half (11-33) while making 4 of 13 from behind the arc. DePauw was 14 of 29 in the opening half (48.3 percent) including 4 of 7 from 3-point range.
Baldez scored five straight cutting the deficit to 38-35 following a trifecta with 18:18 left in the game. Baldez's next hoop would cap a 10-2 run as the Bears tied the game 40-40 with 17:15 left.
Senior Adam Botts knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers as DePauw scored eight straight taking a 54-46 lead with 13:14 left.
Baldez would score five straight again pulling the Bears back to 54-51 before the Tigers used a 12-2 run capped on eight straight points by Lattner with 8:41 left in the game for a 66-53 lead.
Coast Guard shot 38.6 percent from the floor (27 of 70) in the loss and the Bears were 8 for 20 from behind the arc.
DePauw was 31 of 62 from the floor (50 percent) and made 10 of 21 from 3-point range. The Tigers held a huge 45-29 edge on the glass in the win including 12 offensive rebounds.
