TAMPA, Fla. – Junior AJ Pulliam had a game-high 27 points leading Trinity (Texas) to a 75-64 win over Coast Guard in the consolation game of the Tampa Bay Shootout at Tampa Prep.
Senior Kevin Alvarez led Coast Guard with 19 points to earn a spot on the All-tournament team while sophomore Ethan Boose (12) and classmate Darius Adams (11) both scored in double figures for the Bears. Boose led the Bears with seven rebounds while Alvarez and Adams each added six.
Trinity improves to 4-7 on the season while the Bears drop to 6-3 overall.
Trinity jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game before the Bears answered with eight straight to tie the game with 15:52 left on a 3-pointer by sophomore Darius Adams in the opening half.
The Tigers scored nine straight to take their first double digit lead of the game, 22-12 with 8:47 left in the half.
Trinity had its largest lead of the game 33-19 with 4:31 left before the Bears scored nine points in just 1:31 cutting the deficit to 33-28 with 2:59 remaining. The Tigers led 38-30 at halftime.
Pulliam had 14 point to lead Trinity in the first half while Alvarez had seven to led the Bears, who were 11 for 33 from the field in the first half (33.3 percent) hitting 4 of 16 from 3-point range. The Tigers shot 45.5 percent in the first half (15-33) and were 2 of 6 from behind the arc.
Coast Guard would use a 7-2 spurt to cut the deficit to 49-47 following a jumper by freshman Bryce Schroeder with 11:30 left in the game.
Trinity would later score six straight to take a 59-51 lead with 7:14 left before Alvarez had back-to-back buckets making the score 59-55 with 6:41 left.
Pulliam scored five straight including a 3-pointer with 4:24 left pushing the lead to 64-55.
Coast Guard shot 39.4 percent (26-66) and made 6 of 29 from 3-point range while Trinity shot 50 percent from the floor (28-56) while connecting on 5 of 14 from behind the arc.
The Bears are back in action on Sunday when they travel to take on city rival Connecticut College at 3:00.
