NEW LONDON, Conn. – Freshman Bradley Jomard had 22 of his game-high 29 points in the second half and overtime including 9 for 9 from the foul line in the final 51 seconds of regulation and overtime as MIT overcame a nine point deficit with 1:48 left to beat Coast Guard 74-67 in overtime in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game to spoil Senior Day, the final weekend home game of the season.
Coast Guard used a 21-2 second half run to overcome a 10-point deficit and seemed to have a comfortable 57-48 lead when sophomore Ethan Boose made a pair of free throws with 1:48 left in regulation.
The Bears would make just 2 of 7 free throws down the stretch while MIT senior Justin Pedley made a pair of 3-pointers and an old fashion 3-point play by Jomard would pull the Engineers to within 59-57 with 51 seconds left.
Jomard made a pair of free throws to tie the game 59-59 with 23 seconds left after Coast Guard missed the front end of a one-and one.
Senior Kevin Alvarez's jumper at the buzzer would not go down sending the game to overtime.
In the extra session, MIT took the lead for good on a layup by Jomard with four minutes left. He would go 6 for 6 from the foul line in the extra session as MIT converted 13 of 15 from the foul line in overtime to ice the game.
The Bears were just 11 of 19 from the foul line the game, 5 of 11 in the second half.
Jomard added game-high ten rebounds to go with four assists for MIT while Pedley finished with 16 points and seven boards.
Sophomore Micah Baldez led the Bears with 21 points while Alvarez added 18 points and eight rebounds and sophomore Ethan Boose finished with 15 points and nine rebounds.
MIT led by as many as eight in the first half, 16-8 with 13:31 left before the Bears used and 8-0 run to tie the game 16-16 with 6:03 left in the half. The game was tied 27-27 at halftime.
The Engineers opened up their largest lead of the game, 44-34 with 12:50 left on a layup by senior Lampros Tsontzos.
Coast Guard would respond in a big way scoring 14 straight, holding MIT scoreless for close to eight minutes, to take a 48-44 lead following a 3-pointer by Baldez with 6:03 left.
Junior Adrian Chuquillangui knocked down a 3-pointer giving Coast Guard a 55-46 lead with 3:01 left to cap a 21-2 run.
MIT shot 35.9 percent from the field (23-64) while making 11 of 29 from 3-point range in the win while Coast Guard was 26 of 63 from the floor (41.3 percent) making 4 of 20 from behind the arc.
The Engineers improve to 16-4 overall and 8-2 in NEWMAC play while the Bears drop their second straight overtime game and third of the season to dip to 9-11 overall and 3-7 in conference play.
The Bears honored their three seniors, Alvarez, Ricky Rodriguez and Mark Krebs in a pregame ceremony.
Coast Guard is back in action on Wednesday when the Bears host Emerson at 7:00 in a key NEWMAC game.
