SALEM, Va. – Senior Adrian Chuquillangui had a season-high 16 points off the bench while sophomore Luke Daniels had a career-high 16 points and earned a spot on the All-tournament team as Coast Guard beat Frostburg State 77-68 in the consolation game of the Cregger Tournament at Roanoke College.
Freshman Justin Kane added 15 points and a team-high seven rebounds as the Bears snapped four-game losing streak to improve to a 4-6 on the season while Frostburg State dropped to 1-10 overall.
A night after knocking down a season-high 14 three-pointers, the Bears made 12 this afternoon shooting a season-high 50 percent from behind the arc in the win.
The Bears led 34-33 at the half and started the second half on an 8-2 run to take a 42-35 lead on a 3-pointer by Kane with 17:50 left. Daniels scored the first five points of the second half for Coast Guard.
Frostburg cut the deficit to 47-45 before Chuquillangui hit back-to-back 3-pointers to spark an 11-1 run capped on a Daniels 3-pointer as Coast Guard built a 58-46 lead with 9:38 left and cruised to the win.
The Bears shot 37.3 percent in the win (25-67) while the Bobcats were 24 of 58 from the field (41.4 percent) including 9 of 24 from behind the arc.
Frostburg State jumped out to a 13-7 lead with 14:37 left in the first half. The Bears trailed 15-9 before Chuquillangui scored six straight to tie the game beginning a 12-0 run giving Coast Guard a 21-15 lead following a 3-pointer by Kane with 10:28 left in the first half.
Coast Guard took its largest lead of the first half 25-18 on a layup by sophomore Nolan Benson with 8:13 left, but an 11-3 run gave the Bobcats a 29-28 lead with 2:42 remaining in the half.
The Bears are back in action on Wednesday when they host Wheaton in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener at 5:30.
