Witkowski Leads Bears Past Salve

NEWPORT, R.I. – Junior Packy Witkowski had a game-high 30 points while senior Nolan Benson added a career best 17 points leading Coast Guard to an easy 92-77 win over Salve Regina in an a non-conference game.

Witkowski was 11 of 14 from the floor including 5 of 6 from 3-point range and grabbed a team-high six rebounds while Benson made 8 of 12 from the field in the win. It was the fourth 30 point plus game of his career for Witkowski, his career-high is 31 points.

Coast Guard improves to 2-0 on the season and wins its first game in Newport since 1988 snapping a five game slide on the road in the series. Salve Regina drops to 0-2 on the season.

The Bears shot 58.3 percent (35-60) in the win while connecting on 9 of 18 from behind the arc. Salve Regina was 28 of 59 from the field (47.5 percent) and made 9 of 19 from 3-point range.

Junior Jason Frazer was also in double figures for the Bears as he scored nine of his 11 points in the first half and junior Justin Kane finished with 10 points and a team-high six rebounds.

Coast Guard jumped out to a 12-3 lead with 16:31 left in the first half with Witkowski leading the way with seven of those points.

Frazer would catch fire knocking down three straight 3-pointers as Coast Guard opened up a 35-17 lead with 7:23 left in the first half.

Kane would make a pair of free throws with 2:30 left giving Coast Guard a 44-21 lead, but Salve would score the final seven points of the half making the scored 44-28 at the break.

Coast Guard would shoot 53.1 percent the first half (17 of 32) while making 6 of 11 from 3-point range with Witkowski leading the way with 16 points in the first half.

Salve Regina would score the first bucket of the second half before the Bears ran off seven straight to push the lead back to over 20 at 53-32 with 17:08  left.

The Bears would later score nine straight pushing the lead to 65-36 with 13:40 left.

Salve Regina would cut into the deficit with the Coast Guard starters on the bench for most of the second half getting as close as 12 at 89-77 with 2:03 left.

Coast Guard is back in action on Saturday night when the Bears host Medgar Evers on the opening night of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at 8:00.
