Benson Leads Bears to 94-75 Victory Over Medgar Evers

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Senior Nolan Benson scored a career-high 24 points to lead Coast Guard to a 94-75 victory over Medgar Evers in the Coaches vs Cancer Tip-Off Classic on Saturday night.

Coast Guard improves to 3-0 on their season, while Medgar Evers drops to 0-3.

Junior Sean Graytok scored 14 points for the Bears, while Justin Kane and Yonas Gordon both had 10 points. The 10 points for Gordon were also a career-high. Kane led Coast Guard on the boards with eight rebounds.

Medgar Evers started off the game with a 8-0 run. After a brief timeout, Graytok was able to put the Bears on the board to make it 8-2. The cougars maintained a lead throughout the first half but a layup by Gordon at 11.01 sparked a six-point run to tie the game 20-20.

At 5:34 Gordon made a three-pointer to bring the Bears within one, 28-27. Benson and Bryce Schroeder made back-to-back layups to give Coast Guard their first lead of the game, 31-30. To end the half, Coast Guard went on a six-point run and extended their lead to 45-37.

Coast Guard scored 49 points in the second half, 10 coming from Kane who went 4-7 in the field. Graytok was 4-5 from the field and was 1-2 from behind the arc to total nine points in the second half. Benson also had nine points in the second half, going 1-2 in the field and 7-8 in free throws. Coast Guard took the largest lead of the game at 2:20 when Noah Baldez made a dunk to make the score 92-69. Graytok made a layup with 20 seconds remaining to secure the 94-75 final over Medgar Evers.

Coast Guard held an advantage in rebounds, 46-33 and shot 9-22 (40.9%) in three pointers.

The Coaches vs Cancer Tip-Off continues tomorrow at Connecticut College. Medgar Evers will face Connecticut College and Coast Guard will play Wentworth at 4:00 PM.
