WINCHESTER, Va.-- Coast Guard men's basketball defeated Shenandoah in the first round of the Shenandoah Tournament in a 99-87 victory. The Bears improve to 8-1 on the season, while the Hornets drop to 3-7 on the year.
Junior Packy Witkowski led the Bears with 32 points, going 10-19 from the field, 4-7 from behind the arc, and 8-10 in free throws. Senior Nolan Benson was perfect from the field, going 12-12 on the night, also going 2-3 from the free-throw line. Benson led the Bears with nine rebounds and was second in scoring with a career-high 26 points. Christopher Chaney and Alan Dabney led Shenandoah with 19 points each.
Coast Guard held a 32-12 advantage during the first 10 minutes of the first half. Shenandoah kicked off a 19-2 run at 9:22 to trail, 34-27. The Bears ended the half with a 44-40 lead.
Witkowski scored 19 of his points in the second half and junior Noah Baldez chipped in with 11 points in the half. Coast Guard scored a total of 55 points to maintain the lead in the final half to bring the Bears to a 99-87 final.
The Bears reached season-highs in both field goal percentage (60.9%) and with three-point percentage (66.7%). Coast Guard also held the advantage in rebounds 44-32.
The Bears will play in the Championship game tomorrow night against Eastern University (PA.) at 5:00 PM.
