Baldez Scores Career-High 27 Points in Loss to Babson

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Jack Coolahan scored 28 points for Babson on Wednesday night to lead the Beavers to a 85-76 victory over Coast Guard men's basketball in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action. Coast Guard is now 9-4 on the season and drop to 0-3 in the NEWMAC, while Babson improves to 10-4 overall and 3-0 in conference play. 

Frank Ofting had a double-double on the night with 12 points and 15 rebounds. Brandon Johnson notched 13 points with five rebounds and three assists. While Julian Alexis also chipped in with 12 points for Babson in the victory.

Noah Baldez scored a career-high 27 points to lead all Coast Guard players also adding six rebounds. Packy Witkowski had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, also chipping in with four assists. Nolan Benson tallied 10 points and brought down seven boards for Coast Guard.

After trading baskets to open the game, Oftrin made a jumper at 15:41 that sparked a 10-0 run for Babson to extend their lead 17-8. Coast Guard countered with an 13-6 run of their own that was capped off when Sean Graytok made a layup to tie the game 23-23 at 9:56. Jason Frazer made a jump shot to give the Bears a 25-23 lead but the Beavers. Coast Guard ended the first half with a 42-39 lead thanks to Luke Daniels for making a layup with 55 seconds remaining and Baldez adding a layup of his own to hold the advantage heading into halftime.

Babson opened the second half, sinking a three from Alexis to tie the game 42-42. Both teams scored two, three pointers each to help maintain a tie game through the opening two minutes of the half. Coolahan tallied 13 of his points in the second half while Oftring and Alexis added eight apiece as Babson outscored Coast Guard 46-34 in the second half to take the 85-76 final.

Coast Guard held the advantage from the field going 46.6% (34-73) while Babson was 41.8% (33-79). Babson outshot the Bears from three point range going 37.5% (9-24) as Coast Guard went 23.5% (4-17).

Coast Guard will travel to WPI on Saturday to continue NEWMAC play at 2:00 PM.
