New London, Conn.-- Freshman Tyler Perez scored 21 points for Coast Guard men's basketball in the Bears 94-78 victory over Wheaton in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Wednesday night. The Bears are now 11-6 overall and 2-5 in the NEWMAC and Wheaton drops to 10-7 overall and 1-6 in conference play.
Perez went 8-13 from the field and 5-6 from behind the arc, scoring 16 of his points in the first half. Junior Justin Kane had 16 points in the victory and brought down seven rebounds while classmate Packy Witkowski added 15 points and dished out five assists.
David Carbonello led Wheaton with a game-high 27 points, going 11-22 from the field and 5-12 from three point range. Niles Cohen added 14 points and Duaka Ekwensi tallied 11 points for the Lyons.
Coast Guard opened the game with an 11-4 run through the opening 13 minutes of play. Perez and Witkowski dominated shots from three point range in the first half. Perez was 4-5 and Witkowski was 3-7 as the two combined for 31 points in the half.
A jumper at 11:42 brought the Lyons within three as they trailed 18-15. Coast Guard answered with a 13-0 run to extend their lead, 31-15 as Perez capped the run at 8:40 with his third, three-pointer in a row for the Bears. Witkowski scored back-to-back three pointers as the Bears increased the lead, 43-24 with four minutes remaining in the first. The Bears held a 55-31 advantage at halftime.
Wheaton outscored the Bears, 47-39 in the second half lead by Carbonello with 20 points. With 8:40 remaining in the half, Robby Lowey made a jumper to cut the Lyons deficit to 76-66. Coast Guard answered with another 13-0 run to extend their lead, 89-66 as the Bears held onto the lead to take the 94-78 final for their second NEWMAC victory of the season.
Coast Guard shot 50.7% (36-71) from the field while Wheaton shot 46.9% (30-64). The Bears were 47.8% (11-23) from three point range and the Lyons were 42.9% (12-28)
The Bears will play on the road Saturday, January 26 at 2:00 PM against Babson.
