NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – Greg Outlaw had a game-high 17 points leading Central Connecticut to a 104-64 win over Coast Guard in an exhibition game at Detrick Gymnasium.
It was the final tune up for the Bears, who were 16-8 overall and 7-7 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) last season, open the season in the Armed Forces Classic in Anchorage, Alaska on Nov. 8th at midnight EST against Division II Alaska-Anchorage on ESPNU. The opening game of the doubleheader on that night will by Baylor against Washington at 9:30 EST.
Packy Witkowski and Noah Baldez each had nine points to lead Coast Guard. Justin Kane and Madison Maloney each had a team-high four rebounds while Garrett Drummond had a game-high five assists.
Coast Guard shot 36.5 percent from the floor (23-63) including 10 of 27 from 3-point range. Central shot 57.5 percent (42 of 73) in the win and made 12 of 25 from 3-point range.
Tyler Perez hit a 3-pointer with 12:12 left in the first half cutting the Central Connecticut lead to 17-14 as the Bears knocked down 4 of their first 10 3-point attempts.
The Blue Devils would use a 9-1 run to open up a 26-15 lead with 10:17 left in the half.
The Bears answered with a 7-2 spurt cutting the deficit to 28-22 on a trifecta by Witkowski with 8:18 left in the half, but Coast Guard would make just one field goal the rest of the half, a 3-pointer by Jack Brunswick. CCSU scored 12 straight and outscored the Bears 23-5 over the final 7:36 to take a 51-27 halftime lead.
Coast Guard was 8 for 28 from the floor in the opening half (28.6 percent) and made 6 of 15 from 3-point range while the Blue Devils shot 55.6 percent in the first half (20-36) and made 5 of 12 from behind the arc.
