SHELTON, Conn. -- The USCGA men's and women's rowing teams got their 2017/2018 racing season really rolling on Saturday at the Head of the Housatonic Regatta with 51 rowers racing including 14 athletes that raced twice down the 2.5 mile course.
With the team still growing we were able to field two men's varsity eights, one novice men's eight and two men's varsity fours with only three rowers having to double up and race twice.
On the women's side we raced a varsity and a novice eight in the morning. Following the lunch break 10 of the women raced for a second time in fours including novice rowers freshmen Jacqueline Maher and Salena Bantz who were competing in their first regatta
Some of the highlights of the day included:
The women's varsity defended their title by winning the non-Division I Collegiate Eight race. The boat was stroked by sophomore Marissa Marsh who also stroked a four later in the day.
This was the first race for 20 of our rowers including two Air Force exchange cadets juniors Kevin Puri and Conner Hari.
Both the novice men's eight and the novice women's eights beat West Point's novice crews. It is always a challenge to race the cadets of West Point and we hope to be seeing them again this fall as well as during match racing in the spring.
