NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Louis DePaolis had a career high four goals as Coast Guard rolled to a season opening nonconference win over Becker 16-6 at Cadet Memorial Stadium.
DePaolis' four goals ties for the most goals in a single game in program history with Matt and Justin Huemme, who each had four goals in different games last season. Sophomore Matt Huemme had three goals and freshman Jack Pope had his first career goal and hat trick in the win. Senior Blaise Curtis had two assists and a goal for the Bears.
Leading the Hawks was sophomore Avyay Chaganty who had a team high two goals and an assist. Junior Daniel Johnson and senior Ryan Kearny each had a goal and two assists.
Coast Guard jumped out to a 4-0 lead as Matt Huemme scored two goals and freshman Anthony Wyler and Pope each had their first collegiate career goals in the first quarter.
Pope finished off his hat trick in the second period as the Bears took a 10-2 lead going into the locker room.
It was more of the same in the second half as Coast Guard outscored Becker 6-4 in the second half wrapping up a season opening victory 16-6.
In his first career game, freshman Collin Cashin was 11-14 on face offs as the Bears won 19-26 overall in the game. Cashin also had a game high eight ground balls
Sophomore Kurt Caminske started in goal for Coast Guard earning the win and making five saves, allowing two goals. Freshmen Trey Johnson and Connor Hoehle split the second half as Johnson made one save and allowed one goal, while Hoehle made two saves and allowed three goals.
For the Hawks, sophomore Nicholas Mariano received the loss making 11 saves and allowing 12 goals. Mariano was relieved by freshman Jordan Mudd who made one save and allowed one goal.
Coast Guard is back in action on Saturday, February 27 as they host archrival Merchant Marine. Opening faceoff will be 1:00.
