Bears Lose Heartbreaker to No. 20 Camels

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Junior Jordan Foster's goal with 13 seconds left gave No. 20 Conn. College the 9-8 win over Coast Guard Tuesday night in non-conference action.

With the loss, the Bears fall to 5-2 while the Camels improve to 7-1.

Sophomore Riley McNulty had a team high four points with a goal and three assists. Junior Jack Pope finished the game with two goals while freshman Will Iorio had a goal and an assist. 

Junior PJ Kelleher had a game high eight points with four goals and four assists. Foster was second on the team with two goals.

After Conn. College took the early 1-0 lead on a goal by Kelleher just over a minute into the game, Coast Guard came back to score four straight goals capped off by a tally from Iorio with 13:27 remaining in the second quarter.

The two teams swapped two goals each to end the half giving the Bears a 6-3 lead heading into the third quarter.

The Camels had a strong third quarter defensively holding Coast Guard scoreless and scoring two goals of their own to move within one goal (6-5) with one quarter left to play.

Conn. College continued to keep the momentum in the fourth period as they scored three straight goals to take their first lead since the first quarter at 8-6 with 5:44 left in the game.

The Bears mounted a comeback starting with junior Anthony Wyler cutting across the front of the goals and firing in his first goal of the game making the score 8-7 with 2:19 on the clock.

Senior Matt Huemme then tied the game with 45 second left in the game taking a pass from junior Benner Geurtsen and rifling the shot into the back of the net making the score all even at 8-8.

After the Camels won the subsequent face-off and called a time out, Kelleher found Foster cutting to goal. He who quickly took the pass and flicked it into the back of the net for the game winner.

Junior Colin Cashin went head-to-head with one of the top face-off specialists in the country in junior Ben Parens and more than held his own winning 13-20 and collected four ground balls.

Junior Trey Johnson (5-2) made four saves on 13 shots on goal. Johnson leads the NEWMAC with a 6.98 goals-against average.

Junior Jameson Hill started in goal for Conn. College making three saves and allowing six goals. Senior Hunter Rosenthal (2-0) played the final 33:13 allowing two goals and making three saves.

Coast Guard is back in action Saturday, March 31st when they host the Clark Cougars for their first NEWMAC game of the season. Opening face-off is 1:00 PM.
