NEW LONDON, Conn.-- Junior Riley McNulty and senior Trey Johnson were named to the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) preseason teams. The NEILA All New England Preseason teams are voted on by coaches within their respective division. Coaches nominate players from their own team and then vote on the rest of the their division, without voting for their own players.
McNulty earned a spot on the NEILA preseason second team. The 2018 All-American honorable mention led the NEWMAC and the Bears in points (71). He was also first on the team, second in the NEWMAC, with 44 goals and led the Bears in assists (27). Follwoing his performance last season, McNulty brought in a number of postseason accolades. He was named to the NEWMAC All-Conference First Team, second team of the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA), and placed on the Intercollegiate Men's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IMLCA) Northeast All-Region team. After missing the season opener, McNulty is expected to make his season debut against RPI.
Johnson was named to the NEILA preseason third team. The NEWMAC Co-Defensive Athlete of the Year and 2018 All-American honorable mention backstopped the Bears throughout their historic 2018 season, including a trip the the NEWMAC Championship game fot the first time in program history. He finished with a 13-4 record with a 6.87 goals against average, ranking 18th overall in Division III. His goals against average was also first in the NEWMAC, where he was also tied for first with his 13 wins. He posted a 56.4 save percentage, which was third in the NEWMAC.
The Bears won their season opener on Saturday, 10-1 at home over Elizabethtown and Johnson was named the NEWMAC Defensive Athlete of the Week.
Coast Guard is back in action at home again on Wednesday, February 27 at 6:00 PM when they host RPI.
