NEW LONDON, Conn.-- Junior Riley McNulty led Coast Guard men's lacrosse with four goals and one assist as the Bears fell to RPI, 12-11 on Thursday afternoon at Cadet Memorial Field. The Bears are now 1-1, while the Engineers are 2-0.
Lucas Bastarache, JT Kelly, Owen Putman, and Cliff Kigar led the Engineers with two goals each. Will Hatcher, Connor Schnapp, Trevor Tocchet, and Jason Bram all added one goal a piece in the Engineers victory.
The Bears were on the board first as Geurtsen and McNulty scored the first two goals at 11:42 and 10:07 to take the first lead of the game, 2-0. Cooper Urban found Bastarache to give the Engineers their first goal of the game at 5:49 to trail by one. McNulty answered as he scored his second of the game at 5:11 to hold a 3-1 lead. With under a minute remain in the quarter, Kelly scored for RPI with 49 seconds left and McNulty scored his third of the game with five second remaining to hold a 4-2 lead for the Bears.
McNulty extended the lead 5-2 to open the second quarter on a man-up opportunity. At 10:15 in the quarter, Kigar scored his first for the Engineers, sparking a four goal run as they took a 7-6 lead heading into halftime.
Putman scored his first of the game at 14:00 in the third quarter to extend the Engineers lead, 8-6. The Bears answered by scoring the next three goals to hold a 9-8 advantage. At 4:45 in the third, Bram scored an unassisted goal for RPI to tie the game 9-9, heading into the fourth quarter.
Matty Johnson opened the fourth quarter with his first goal of the season, giving the Bears a 10-9 advantage. However, RPI scored the next three goals to take the lead 12-10. Iorio pulled the Bears within one, 12-11 with 1:37 remaining but the Engineers held on for the 12-11 final.
Coast Guard senior goalie Trey Johnson made 11 saves and is now 1-1 on the season.
The Engineers sophomore Brian Doughty made two saves in the first half and freshman Kyle Botsford made eight saves in the second half.
Coast Guard outshot RPI, 60-34 and in ground balls, 27-17.
The Bears are back in action this Saturday, March 3 at 3:30 PM when they travel to McDaniel.
