NEW LONDON, Conn.-- Junior Riley McNulty scored a season-high, seven goals including his 100th career goal for Coast Guard men's lacrosse in a 14-9 victory over NY Maritime on Wednesday evening. He is the first player in program history to reach the 100 career goals milestone. The Bears improve to 4-2 on the season and Maritime now drops to 4-2.
McNulty led the Bears with seven goals and three assists, while sophomore Will Iorio added a pair of his own. Senior Benner Geurtsen tallied one goal with a game-high, four assists, and sophomores Conor Rowan, Matty Johnson, seniors Jack Pope, and Ian Logan all added on goal each in the victory.
Matt DeMeo led the Privateers with five goals and one assist. Danny Connell, Mike Leake, Bryan Keegan, and Brett Trodden all contributed with a goal each for Maritime in the setback.
The Bears got on the board first at 13:53 and 13:06 from Iorio and Logan, to take a quick 2-0 lead. Leake and DeMeo scored back-to-back goals for the Privateers to tie it up, 2-2. McNulty scored his first two of the game, including one with .5 seconds remaining in the first quarter, to give the Bears a 4-2 lead.
Coast Guard scored the next three goals to open the second quarter with a 7-2 advantage. Keegan and DeMeo combined for the next two goals for the Privateers to cut their deficit, 7-4 but Geurtsen scored with seven seconds left on the clock to give the Bears an 8-4 lead heading into halftime.
Johnson and McNulty opened the third quarter with their two back-to-back goals, extending the Bears lead to, 10-4. Maritime notched two more within a minute to trail 10-6 before McNulty scored his 100th career goal at 6:43 coming Geurtsen behind the cage, giving the Bears an 11-6 lead. Connell and DeMeo scored the final two goals of the quarter for Maritime as they pulled within three.
McNulty added two more goals to kick off the final quarter and Rowan scored on a man-down play at 2:08 for the Bears to take the 14-9 final.
Coast Guard won 19-25 face-offs and outshot Maritime, 47-27.
Senior goalkeeper Trey Johnson made nine saves in the game to improve to 4-2 on the season. While Justin Weigold had seven saves in the first half and Kyle Bockelman had six saves in the second half.
The Bears are back in action on the road this Saturday when they travel to Merchant Marine for a 12:00 PM start.
