KINGS POINT, N.Y.-- Senior Anthony Wyler scored the game-winning goal with 11 seconds remaining in overtime to lift Coast Guard men's lacrosse to a 12-11 victory over rival Merchant Marine on Saturday afternoon. The Bears are now 5-2 on the season, while the Mariners drop to 4-3.
Junior Riley McNulty lead the Bears with four goals, followed by Wyler, who notched a hat trick in the victory. Sophomores Connor Rowan and Matty Johnson added a pair of goals each, and senior Benner Geurtsen added one more for the Bears. Junior Justin Edwards picked up a career-high nine ground balls to lead the Bears defense.
Nick Roros had four goals to lead the Mariners. Jack Renard and John Maudsley added two goals each, Mike Morsberger and Matt Kane rounded out scoring for Merchant Marine with one goal apiece.
Wyler put the Bears on the board first at 13:48, to spark a strong first quarter as they opened with a five-goal run and shut down the Mariners offense.
Merchant Marine answered in the second quarter taking a three-goal run of their own, trailing 5-3. Johnson scored his first of the game with 15 seconds remaining in the half, to extend the Bears lead, 6-3.
The Mariners outscored Coast Guard 4-2 in the third quarter as they rallied to bring themselves within one, 8-7 with 5:55 remaining in the third.
Roros tied in 8-8 for Merchant Marine to open the fourth quarter at 14:43. Johnson and McNulty scored back-to-back goals for the Bears to take the lead back, 10-8. The Mariners scored two goals in a 30 second span to tie it again, 10-10. McNulty scored again at 1:51 to take a one goal lead, 11-10 but Roros answered with 39 seconds in regulation to force the game into overtime.
The Bears held on through the overtime period and regained their final possession with just over a minute left to play. Geurtsen found Wyler, who put away the game-winning goal with 11 seconds on the clock to give the Bears the 12-11 final over Merchant Marine.
Senior goalkeeper Trey Johnson made 12 saves in the victory and improves to 5-2 on the season. Brendan Kane made nine saves for Merchant Marine in the setback and is now 1-1 on the season.
The Bears are back home on Wednesday night at 7:00 PM when they host Connecticut College.
