WORCESTER, Mass.-- Senior Benner Geurtsen scored the game-winning goal for Coast Guard men's lacrosse to complete the 14-13 comeback victory against Clark to open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday night. The Bears improve to 7-2 on the season and 1-0 in the NEWMAC, while Clark drops to 4-6 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Brandon King scored a game-high six goals to lead Clark. Jack Mandracchia and Bobby Philbin both added a pair of goals, while Andrew Hollerbach, Chris Rasco, and Jack Pierce rounded out scoring for the Cougars with a goal each.
Clark opened the first quarter with a seven goal run. Wyler put the Bears on the board at 2:21, followed by McNulty with his first of the game at 1:01 in the first as the Bears trailed, 7-2.
Clark scored the first two goals of the second quarter but Wyler scored his second of the game at 8:31 that sparked a four goal run for the Bears to end the half with a 9-6 deficit.
The Bears continued to chip away at the Cougars lead. McNulty opened the third quarter with his third goal of the game to bring the Bears within two. Rasco and Hollerbach scored back-to-back goals to extend the Cougars lead, 11-7. Geurtsen scored the final two goals of the third quarter to bring the Bears back within two, 11-9.
Clark scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter to extend their lead by four goals again, 13-9. The Bears answered at 12:20 when sophomore Will Iorio found Johnson to put away his first of the game, sparking a five goal run. With under one minute remaining, Wyler scored the goal to tie the game, 13-13. The Bears won the next face-off to gain possession with 53 second remaining. Geurtsen buried the game-winner with 24 seconds left on the clock to complete the comeback victory for the Bears.
Junior goalkeeper Charles McAllister entered the game in the first quarter and made six saves in the victory and is 1-0 on the season. Nathan Maselek backstopped the Cougars with 15 saves in the loss and drops to 3-5 on the season.
The Bears are back in action on Wednesday, April 3 when they host UMass.-Dartmouth at home at 7:00 PM.
