NORTON, Mass.-- Senior Anthony Wyler scored his 100th career goal in Coast Guard men's lacrosse 20-5 victory over Wheaton in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) on Saturday afternoon. The Bears, who win their seventh in a row, improve to 9-2 overall and 2-0 in the NEWMAC. Wheaton drops to 6-4 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.
Junior Riley McNulty had a nine point day as he scored five goals and added four assists. Wyler tallied a hat trick with one assists for a four point game. Seniors Benner Geurtsen and Jack Pope, also scored hat tricks and sophomore Matty Johnson added a pair of goals for the Bears. Sophomore Will Iorio, junior Ryan Gochar, senior Ian Logan, and junior Logan Morin all scored one goal each in the victory.
Alex Berg, Gil Bach, Mike Abramo, Alex Stomberg, and Matt Morgan each scored a goal for Wheaton.
The Bears opened the game with an eight goal run sparked by Geurtsen and capped off by McNulty at 7:39 in the first quarter. Five goals in the run came from McNulty and Wyler scored two. Wyler became the second player in program history to score 100 goals with his first goal of the game at 9:56.
Stomberg put Wheaton on the board at 6:17 as the Lyons trailed, 8-1 with 6:17 remaining in the first. Pope ended the first quarter with his second of the game with 1:29 to give the Bears a 9-1 advantage to end the first quarter.
Bach scored the first goal of the second quarter at 13:19 as Wheaton trailed, 9-2. Johnson, Geurtsen, and Iorio combined for the next three Coast Guard goals to extend their lead, 12-2. Morgan gave Wheaton a goal at 5:18 but Gochar answered with his first of the game to close out the half with a 13-3 lead for the Bears.
The Bears scored two goals in the third quarter, coming from Wyler and McNulty and Wheaton also tallied two more in the third as the Bears held a 15-5 advantage.
Coast Guard shutout Wheaton in the final quarter at they scored five more goals to take the 20-5 final.
Senior Trey Johnson made nine saves in the victory and improves to 8-2 on the season. Wheaton junior goalkeeper Chandler Miller made 20 saves in the loss and drops to 6-4 on the season.
The Bears are back in action next Saturday, April 13 at home in their first NEWMAC home game against MIT at 1:00 PM.
