NEW LONDON, CT. – Junior co-captain John Rendon scored twice leading the Bears to a 3-1 victory of cross-town foe Mitchell College. Coast Guard is now 6-0-1 in their last seven and improves to 9-3-1 on the season. The Mariners drop to 4-6-0.
Rendon scored the game's first goal as he finished a loose ball in the box following a Matthew Bogdan corner kick.
Mitchell answered right back just six minutes later as Michael Berthiaume netted his third goal of the season, tying the match 1-1.
Coast Guard dominated possession, outshooting the Mariners 9-1 in the first half, but was unable to convert on several chances until Rendon scored his second of the game with just 1:54 remaining before halftime. Rendon took a free kick from the left side of the box beating Mitchell goalkeeper Ramazan Sinani, reclaiming the Bears lead, this time for good.
Coast Guard added an insurance goal just four minutes into the second half as Bogdan sent a free kick into the box finding the head of a leaping John Tarzian, giving the Bears a 3-1 lead. For Tarzian, it was his fourth of the season and third in the past two games, all coming off of headers.
"It was great to get another non-conference win today," said Coast Guard Head Coach Chris Parsons. "Mitchell played well in front of a homecoming crowd. They were difficult to break down, but our performance in the second half was excellent - it easily could have been five or six to one. We look forward to the challenge of hosting Eastern Connecticut State on Wednesday, and after that, MIT is a huge game for us on the road on Saturday."
