The 2017 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District® Men's and Women's Soccer Teams have been released to recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. For the second time in as many years senior Austin Read was named to the Academic All-District First Team and will be on the 2017 ballot for CoSIDA Academic All-America honors.
Read was a CoSIDA Third Team Academic All-American last year becoming the first athlete at the Academy since Adam Scalesse (second team) and Ben Wolhaupter (third team) both were named Academic-All Americans as members of the Coast Guard track & field team in 2014.
Read, an Electrical Engineering major, as co-captain led Coast Guard to their first 10 win season since 2014. Read earned NEWMAC Defensive Player of the Year honors after a stellar season anchoring the Bears back four. He led a Coast Guard defense that was 12th in the nation in shutout percentage (.611), second in the conference and 18th in the nation in goals against average (0.58) and second in the conference in total shutouts (11). Read is a three time All-NEWMAC selection and a 2016 third team All-Region selection. He has started 71 of 73 games in his collegiate career tallying 26 points on 12 goals and two assists.
Since Read was named a First-team Academic All-District™ honoree, he advances to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third team All-America honorees will be selected later this month. This is the seventh year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non-Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division Academic All-America® Team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
